Let's celebrate Women in Science
We are proud to work alongside inspiring women whose leadership, expertise, and dedication are shaping the future of science and healthcare. On this important day, ELPA is pleased to highlight Irène Vignon-Clementel, Research Director at INRIA and a key contributor to the ARTEMIS project – The Power of Virtual Twins to Fight MASLD. Meet Dr. Cristina Ripoll, a clinician‑scientist leading liver disease research with the ARTEMIS project. By integrating patient voices into her translational work, she’s showing how virtual twin technology can transform the fight against MASLD and bridge the gap between clinical practice and large‑scale European collaborations. Her journey underscores the power of putting patients at the center of innovation.
ARTEMIs Layperson Event Brings Patient Perspectives into the Future of Digital Health
On 27 May 2026, during EASL Congress in Barcelona, the ARTEMIS project held its first layperson event, bringing together ELPA members, national patient representatives, researchers and healthcare professionals to discuss the future of virtual twins in healthcare.
The one-hour session combined presentations led by Prof. Irene Vignon-Clementel (Inria), a pioneer in Digital Human Twins, Dr. Raluca Pais (PitiĂ©-SalpĂŞtrière Hospital, Paris), and Prof. Juan Manuel PericĂ s (Vall d’Hebron University Hospital). Moderated by ELPA President Marko Korenjak followed by an interactive Q&A, creating an open dialogue on how patient communities perceive digital twins and the role of trust in adopting innovative technologies in healthcare. Participants learned how the ARTEMIs project aims to accelerate the translation of virtual twins into personalised management for people living with steatotic liver disease (MASLD), while also sharing their expectations, concerns and questions regarding the use of such technologies in clinical practice.
The discussion highlighted the importance of involving people living with liver disease from the earliest stages of research and innovation. Trust, transparency, explainability and patient engagement emerged as key elements for the successful implementation of virtual twin technologies in healthcare.
The event marked an important milestone for ARTEMIs and reinforced ELPA’s commitment to ensuring that the patient voice remains at the centre of research, innovation and future healthcare solutions.

It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to you on behalf of the European Liver Patients' Association (ELPA). As the President of ELPA, I am excited to embark on this journey alongside you, as we witness the inception of a groundbreaking project - ARTEMIs. ARTEMIs holds the promise of revolutionizing liver health care, and we eagerly anticipate the results and benefits it will bring to patients. Through this consortium, patients will experience a paradigm shift in their journey towards liver health, with access to innovative solutions and personalized care like never before. At ELPA, we are committed to ensuring that ARTEMIs remains true to its core values of patient- centricity and transparency. We are proud to partner with ARTEMIs, working hand in hand to prioritize the needs and well-being of patients at every stage of the project. As we embark on this journey together, we look forward to witnessing the tangible impact of ARTEMIs on patients' lives. We are insistent on transparency, ensuring that patients have access to clear and accurate information, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. I extend my gratitude to all the stakeholders involved in making ARTEMIs a reality. Together, we are shaping a future where liver health is prioritized, and patients receive the care and support they deserve. Thank you for your interest in ARTEMIs. Join us as we eagerly await the results and benefits that this innovative project will bring to patients worldwide. We expected to achieve considerable societal impact, by offering clinicians and patients an interactive visualization tool wherein real-world data, as well as risk stratification and early diagnosis predictions are made easy. This is an ambitious project involving 9 countries, 21 partners and a cohort of 7500 patients but ambition is a fundamental ingredient when taking the challenge to improve MASLD patients' hearthcare journy!
